Gibson f4 mandolin history FON 2882. A veritable time capsule! Extremely fine original condition, great sounding early Gibson F4! In all the years we have been buying and selling mandolins, we do not recall ever having acquired such a fine example from this early in the 20th century. The model was Gibson’s top-of-the-line mandolin until the introduction of the Master Model F-5 in 1922. The unique new scroll "3-point" design was a huge step forward in the development of the modern mandolin look, which has come to serve generations of bluegrass, jazz, popular, and even Introduced in 1902, the F‑4 reigned for more than a decade as Gibson’s top‑of‑the‑line mandolin, favored by players for its warmth, projection, and elegant scroll‑body design. Now viewing page 1 of 9 Gibson’s F-4 mandolin was first cataloged in 1902 and featured a “3 point” body until the more familiar 2 point shape was introduced in 1910. This example is a phenomenally well-preserved F-4 from 1909 which features a natural top finish, highly figured bookmatched maple back, Handel tuning machines, pearl nut, and “Patent Applied For The 1909 Gibson F-4 mandolin, with a lavishly detailed flower pot headstock inlay, was also an early version of the proliferating Artist's model series. Interestingly its mandola-sized headstock is inlaid with “The Gibson” script logo and the small flowerpot of the Loar period (perhaps they were lying around the factory for 20 or so years).
